The Miners’ Union Dance
A photo can tell us many things about the place and time it was taken.
This picture shows a dance that was organized by a Fairview miners' union. It shows men and women dressed up and posing in front of Union Jack and American flags with a sign reading "Welcome All."
Look at the picture and think about the following questions:
How many men are in the picture? How many women? What does that tell us about life in Fairview?
Why do you think there is an American flag on the wall?
Why is there a Union Jack flag? Do you know what “Union Jack” means?
Unions are organizations that try to help and protect workers. Why do you think this union had a dance for the miners?
