The Ditch: Lifeline of a Community
The Ditch: Lifeline of a Community
Author: Julie Cancela
This small but informative booklet provides a thorough overview of the history of the Ditch irrigation project and how it created the community of Oliver. From the initial idea for the South Okanagan Lands Project and its close ties to World War I to the massive engineering and construction process, the book offers a glimpse back into early life in the community, its tent cities and high hopes for the future, and the farming and orcharding industry it founded. This small volume includes many historic photos of the project and the early town. It ends with a chapter on the Southern Okanagan Lands Irrigation District taking over and running the project in the 1960s and beyond.
